California strikes a deal with Anthropic — government agencies get Claude at half price

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Monday that the state has signed a partnership with Anthropic, giving state and local government agencies access to the company’s Claude AI models at half the regular price.

Under the deal, California’s state administrative departments — along with city and county governments — can purchase Anthropic’s Claude tools at a 50% discount. The package includes free training and direct technical assistance from Anthropic’s developers, along with guidance on integrating generative AI into existing workflows.

The state plans to use Claude for a range of tasks: drafting and summarizing documents, analyzing information, and supporting routine office work across government agencies. The goal is straightforward — improve public services by letting AI handle the paperwork.

The partnership marks an interesting shift in Anthropic’s relationship with the US government. It hasn’t been an easy year. In March, the Pentagon classified Anthropic as a “supply chain risk” entity. Then in June, the Commerce Department imposed strict export controls on the company’s latest Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models, citing national security concerns and potential jailbreak risks.

A state-level deal like this suggests those federal tensions haven’t blocked Anthropic from working with governments entirely — just at a different level.
