Evercade's new €70 handheld packs 34 Atari 2600 classics — including Pitfall!

Retro gaming has a new contender for your pocket. Evercade’s latest Super Pocket handheld isn’t aiming for 4K graphics or cloud streaming — it’s betting that 34 games from the Atari 2600 era, all stored in internal memory, are worth €70 of anyone’s money.

The Activision Edition — that’s the full name — comes pre-loaded with a curated library of games from the golden age of cartridge gaming. The roster includes genuine classics: Pitfall!, where you swing through jungles as Harry; River Raid, a vertically scrolling shooter that defined a genre; H.E.R.O., an early action-puzzle hybrid; Enduro, a surprisingly ambitious racing game for its time; and Keystone Kapers, a charming police-chase platformer. All 34 titles are stored in the handheld’s internal storage, so no cartridges are required to start playing.

The hardware itself is modest but practical. A 2.8-inch IPS LCD screen runs at 320×240 resolution — a perfect match for pixel art from the late 70s and early 80s. There’s a USB-C port for charging, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a 3000 mAh battery that Evercade rates at 3 to 4.5 hours of play time. That’s enough for a transatlantic flight or a weekend of casual gaming.

What makes the Super Pocket line different from the sea of cheap emulation handhelds is the licensing. These aren’t ROMs pulled off the internet — they’re officially licensed Activision titles, the same ones that made the Atari 2600 a cultural phenomenon. For collectors and preservation-minded players, that distinction matters.

But Evercade hasn’t locked the system down. The Super Pocket is compatible with the company’s existing Evercade cartridge ecosystem, so anyone who already owns Evercade cartridges can expand the library beyond the 34 built-in games. It’s a smart compromise: a complete experience out of the box, with room to grow.

The handheld launches on September 28 at €69.99 (roughly $76 or £60). At that price, it undercuts most retro-focused competitors while offering licensed software and a recognizable brand name. Whether you’re revisiting childhood favorites or discovering why Pitfall! was a household name, the Super Pocket Activision Edition is a straightforward pitch: no subscriptions, no microtransactions, just 34 games and a screen.
