Pokemon's next generation is reportedly adding over 300 new creatures — the most in series history
The next mainline Pokemon games are reportedly adding more new creatures than any generation before — and by a wide margin. According to leaks circulating this week, Pokemon Wind and Wave, the series’ tenth-generation titles planned for the Switch 2, could introduce over 300 entirely new Pokemon.
CentroLeaks, a source with a mixed but occasionally accurate track record on Pokemon scoops, claims the development build currently contains 531 Pokemon entries, with 307 slots reserved for completely new species and regional variants. Temporary and special forms may not count toward that total.
For context, the entire Pokemon franchise currently sits at 1,025 confirmed species. Adding 300-plus in a single generation means nearly a quarter of everything that’s ever existed would arrive at once. That’s roughly triple what a typical new generation introduces — Pokemon Sword and Shield launched with 81 new Pokemon, and even the ambitious Scarlet and Violet added 105.
The number has some fans skeptical. A jump this large raises questions about design quality, creative fatigue, and whether Game Freak can maintain the distinctive identity each new Pokemon has historically carried. Others see it as a necessary reset for a franchise that’s been expanding its roster for 30 years.
Nintendo confirmed Pokemon Wind and Wave for a 2027 release on the Switch 2 earlier this year, but has kept most gameplay details under wraps. What is known: the games will feature a new open-world setting, a fresh region to explore, and a set of starter Pokemon revealed during the initial announcement.
Beyond the inflated Pokedex, CentroLeaks also suggests the games may introduce a new battle mechanic tied to weather conditions. Certain Pokemon could gain special forms depending on in-game weather — rain, snow, sandstorms, or sunlight — adding a strategic layer that rewards players who adapt their teams to the environment. Earlier rumors pointed to legendary Pokemon receiving alternate forms as well, which could account for some of those 307 slots.
Leakers have also hinted that the new forms and expanded roster may tie into a larger narrative conceit — perhaps a region shaped by extreme climates or a story about ecological change. Nothing is confirmed, but a weather-focused mechanic would be a natural fit for games named Wind and Wave.
As always, Nintendo and The Pokemon Company have not commented on any of these claims. The full Pokedex for Generation 10 remains unannounced. But if the leaks hold true, 2027 will be the year the Pokemon world gets a lot more crowded.
