Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 'Wide' Renders Leak — July 22 Launch Looks Likely

Samsung’s next book-style foldable is shaping up to be its thinnest and lightest yet. A new set of leaked renders posted by reliable tipster @i冰宇宙 on Weibo shows the Galaxy Z Fold8 — the “wide” variant, distinct from the recently-rumored Ultra model — alongside a Galaxy S26 Ultra for size comparison. The renders suggest a launch date of July 22 is on the table.

The numbers backing up the renders are genuinely impressive. When unfolded, the Z Fold8 measures just 4.5 millimeters thick — thin enough that you’d be forgiven for mistaking it for a tablet panel with a hinge. Folded shut, it thickens to a still-respectable 9.7mm. Total weight comes in at 201 grams, which would make it one of the lightest foldables on the market, period. For reference, the iPhone 16 Pro Max weighs 227 grams.

The display setup is where things get interesting. The inner screen is a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with a 4:3 aspect ratio — a noticeably squarer canvas than the tall, narrow proportions Samsung has favored in previous generations. That 4:3 ratio is a deliberate choice: it mirrors the aspect ratio of iPads and many professional cameras, making it better suited for reading documents, editing photos, and browsing the web in landscape mode. The cover display, meanwhile, is a 5.5-inch panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio in landscape orientation — wider than the tall, narrow cover screens Samsung has used on the Fold series to date.

Under the hood, Samsung is going all-in on custom silicon. The Z Fold8 will ship with a Samsung-customized 3nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 mobile platform — a Qualcomm chip built specifically for this device. That’s paired with 12GB of RAM and storage options up to 1TB.

The camera system gets a significant overhaul compared to the Fold7. The rear setup features a 50-megapixel f/1.8 primary sensor alongside a 50-megapixel f/1.9 ultrawide — matching the resolution across both lenses, which should give more consistent color and detail between the two. Both the inner and outer screens house a 10-megapixel f/2.2 front-facing camera.

Battery life is handled by a 4,800mAh cell — slightly larger than the Fold7’s 4,400mAh. It supports what Samsung is calling “Super Fast Charging 2.0” and “Wireless Fast Charging 2.0,” though the company hasn’t disclosed exact wattage figures yet.

The 4:3 inner screen is arguably the most telling design choice here. Most foldable phones have trended toward tall, narrow aspect ratios (the Pixel 9 Pro Fold uses roughly 5:8, for instance), which makes them feel like a TV show when unfolded. Samsung’s shift to 4:3 signals a device designed for productivity — closer to a small iPad than an oversized phone. It’s a bet that foldable buyers want a device that genuinely replaces both their phone and their tablet, rather than one that merely stretches their phone screen.

If the July 22 launch holds, Samsung is looking at a tight window before Apple’s expected foldable iPhone debut later this year. The Fold8 needs to land with conviction.
