Sony FX5 Cinema Camera Leaks: 16 Stops of Dynamic Range, €5,399 Body Price
There’s a new cinema camera coming from Sony, and if the rumors hold up, it’s aimed squarely at independent filmmakers who want Venice-level image quality in a compact body.
IT-NEWS, July 17 — According to Sony Alpha Rumors, the FX5 will ship with three base ISO settings — 800, 4000, and 12800 — and 16 stops of dynamic range, which puts it in the same ballpark as much more expensive cinema cameras.
The camera is expected to launch on July 22. In Europe, the body alone will cost €5,399, while a kit with the XLR handle runs €5,999.
A 16-megapixel full-stacked sensor drives the system, paired with Sony’s BIONZ XR2 image processor and the same AI autofocus system found in the A7R VI. The FX5 can record 5K video at the full 3:2 Open Gate aspect ratio, and supports 16-bit RAW capture in X-OCN LT, C1, and C2 formats — the same codec family used by Sony’s Venice cinema line.
The camera also features in-body image stabilization, though the IBIS unit may be detachable — a design choice that hints at modularity for gimbal or rig use. The menu system borrows from the Venice lineup, which should make it familiar to operators who work across Sony’s higher-end ecosystem.
Notably, the FX5 skips several features you might expect: there’s no built-in ND filter, no external SSD recording support, and no still photo mode. This is a pure cinema camera, not a hybrid.
Sony is also offering a new detachable electronic viewfinder for €799. The rear screen is a 3.5-inch fully articulating display. Storage uses dual card slots, accepting either SD or CFexpress Type A cards.
Physically, the body resembles the FX3 but is slightly thicker — likely to accommodate the stacked sensor and cooling for extended recording sessions. An optional XLR handle supports 32-bit float audio capture.
