Valve's Latest Steam Deck Update Fixes Black Screen Issues in Assassin's Creed
Valve pushed a stable update to every Steam Deck on Sunday, addressing a bug that left some games stuck on a black screen.
SteamOS 3.8.16 rolls back an HDR fix that shipped in the previous release. That patch broke Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag — Memory Reset, causing the game to crash to a black screen on launch. Valve has moved the HDR changes back to the Beta channel while engineers investigate the root cause.
The reverting-the-revert strategy isn’t unusual for Valve. The company frequently uses its Beta branch as a proving ground for more aggressive fixes, promoting only the safest updates to the Stable channel. Anyone who relied on the HDR improvement can still access it by switching to the SteamOS Beta or Preview channels in the system settings.
Steam Deck owners should see the update appear automatically over the next few hours. A full reboot is required to apply the changes.
This is a minor maintenance release — there are no new features or performance tweaks beyond the stability fix. Valve hasn’t published a timeline for when the HDR fix might return to the Stable channel, but the Beta branch typically runs a couple of weeks ahead of the mainline release.
