Colorful Pushes Domestic DDR5 Memory to 8600MT/s on X870E Motherboard
Colorful has pushed a set of domestically-produced DDR5 memory modules to 8600MT/s using its high-end X870E motherboard and an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D processor. The overclocking result, announced Friday, is the latest sign that Chinese DRAM manufacturing is closing the gap with established players like Samsung and SK Hynix.
That 8600MT/s figure was achieved on the iGame X870E VULCAN W OC V14 — a special overclocking variant of Colorful’s “Black Vulcan” board that first appeared at COMPUTEX this year. The motherboard uses gold immersion and back-drilling techniques, both of which help maintain signal integrity at higher memory frequencies. The memory kit in question is Colorful’s own iGame Shadow II (影 Ⅱ) line, rated at a more modest 6000MT/s CL34 at stock speeds, likely a 16GB ×2 configuration.

Colorful is hardly alone in this push. ASUS recently demonstrated a dual-slot B850 board pushing CXMT (ChangXin Memory Technologies) DDR5 to 8400MT/s. Lexar has announced plans to ship a 7600MT/s CL38 overclocking kit based on CXMT dies. And MSI became the first motherboard vendor to complete deep AMD platform tuning for CXMT memory, breaking DDR5-8000 in the process.
What’s notable here isn’t just the raw number — 8600MT/s is impressive but not record-breaking by absolute standards. The significance is that these results are coming from domestic Chinese DRAM dies running on mainstream AMD platforms, using commercially-available hardware. Two years ago, locally-produced memory struggled to hit 6000MT/s cleanly. The pace of improvement suggests CXMT’s process nodes are maturing faster than many in the industry expected.
For PC builders watching the memory market, the practical takeaway is straightforward: Chinese DDR5 is becoming a viable option for enthusiast-grade builds, not just budget systems. At 8600MT/s with tight timings, the gap between domestic memory and the Samsung/Kioxia/Hynix incumbents is narrowing to the point where it may soon become academic.
