Dell Publishes List of PCs That Can't Install Microsoft's July Windows 11 Update
Microsoft shipped its July cumulative update for Windows 11 a few days ago, and now Dell has confirmed exactly which of its machines can’t handle it.
The update — KB5101650, released July 14 for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 — was supposed to be a routine security and quality patch. Instead, it kicked off a compatibility mess that Microsoft itself flagged on day one, warning that some Dell systems with Intel processors would be blocked from installing it.
Dell has now published the full list of affected machines, and it’s not a short one. The company’s latest Pro Max line — the Pro Max 14 Premium MA14250 and Pro Max 16 Premium MA16250 — are on it. So are the Pro Precision 7 14 PW714260 and Pro Precision 7 16 PW716260. The Precision workstation line is hit hard: models 5470, 5480, 5490, and 5770 all have problems. And the XPS 17 lineup isn’t spared either — the 9720 and 9730 are both incompatible.
The root cause traces back to a USB-C change Microsoft made in the July update. The company reworked its USB-C connection manager interface to improve Windows 11 performance and stability. The problem is that Dell’s Intel Innovation Platform Framework (IPF) driver — which handles power management and platform communication on these machines — doesn’t play well with the new interface.

The symptoms aren’t subtle. Microsoft says affected Dell machines that somehow get the update installed could experience random shutdowns, degraded performance, overheating, excessive battery drain, and in the worst cases, blue screen of death (BSOD) crashes. Users might also notice a yellow warning triangle next to the driver in Device Manager.

Microsoft says it’s working with both Dell and Intel to sort out the compatibility issue and push out a fix. No timeline has been announced yet, but the three companies have acknowledged the problem and are actively testing a patch. For now, if you own one of the listed Dell models, the safest move is to hold off on the July update until an official resolution lands.
