HMD Global Reportedly Plans to Buy the Lumia Brand from Microsoft

After reviving Nokia’s Asha phones earlier this year, HMD Global may be ready to reclaim another piece of mobile history.

IT-NEWS, July 20 — The Finnish company is preparing an acquisition offer for Microsoft’s Lumia trademark and related patent assets, according to a leak from tipster smashx_60.

The Lumia brand has been in limbo since 2018, when Microsoft effectively abandoned it after winding down Windows Phone. HMD Global — the company behind today’s Nokia-branded phones — had previously approached Microsoft about reclaiming the Lumia rights. Those talks went nowhere, and the matter was shelved.

The offer amount remains undisclosed. But HMD has a clear playbook: it revived Nokia’s Asha brand earlier this year, positioning the new Asha 305 as a low-cost LTE phone for children, digital detox users, and collectors — a far cry from the smartphones Asha once competed with. A Lumia revival would likely take a similar niche approach.

For a generation of phone enthusiasts, the original Lumias were something different — bright polycarbonate shells, Zeiss-branded cameras, and a mobile OS that dared to be unlike Android or iOS. Whether a revival could capture any of that spirit remains to be seen, but HMD is clearly not done digging through Nokia’s attic.
