PS5 disc game data mysteriously disappeared — Sony says it's a system bug
Days after Sony announced plans to phase out physical games entirely, PS5 owners woke up to a different kind of problem: their disc-based game data was simply gone.
Players began flooding social media over the weekend with reports that trophy data and playtime records for physical disc games had disappeared from the PS5 home screen. The timing could not have been worse — Sony just confirmed last week that it will stop manufacturing physical PlayStation games by January 2028, and the community is already on edge about what a fully digital future looks like.

X (formerly Twitter) user tortuenoire23 posted a detailed account: “A lot of people probably haven’t noticed yet, but PlayStation quietly wiped all disc game playtime data from personal profiles, along with the corresponding PSN trophy records. The only games still showing up are ones that include digital content you’ve already installed.”
Another user, mugiseb, reported a similar experience with the PlayStation mobile app: “The official app’s personal play record page is now outright deleting disc game records and sub-account play history.”
Some players said they could not see any physical games in their game history at all.
It is easy to read this as Sony quietly pulling the lever on physical media. But according to PlayStation support, the whole thing is a software bug — not a feature.
IT-NEWS, July 5 — Customers who contacted PlayStation customer service received a straightforward response. A support representative confirmed: “We are aware that some players are experiencing abnormal access to online data. The issues include incorrect game history information, missing physical game entries, and distorted playtime statistics.”
The rep added that the engineering team is actively working on a fix and will push a patch as soon as possible. Until then, disc game data and recent play activity will continue to show incorrect or missing information.
For now, trophy data can still be viewed through the dedicated trophies tab on the console, which appears unaffected. The missing playtime on the home screen is the main issue.
Sony confirmed this data glitch has nothing to do with the company’s move toward all-digital distribution. But the coincidence has rattled players. If a bug can erase the records of games you physically own, what happens when there are no discs at all?
